COHABITATION
Have you been living together and thinking of separating? You may want to know what rights you have.
“Common Law Wife”
is a myth! There is no such thing.
The rights and legal implications of couples living together are somewhat of a minefield and much will depend upon the circumstances in which you entered into the relationship and whether there are any children.
The main asset is usually the house. If the house was bought in your joint names then the general rule is that any equity in the property is split equally between the parties. If the house is in one parties sole name, the other party may have acquired a right to part of the equity in the property by virtue of contributions to the purchase price or mortgage repayments. Simply paying general household bills DOES NOT acquire any right to property.
